Our Story
1917: A Door Opens on King Street
In the fall of 1917, Mendel Dumas unlocked the door to a small storefront on Charleston’s King Street. The world was changing, and Charleston was swelling with the energy of a growing port city. Mendel’s shop—humble, warm, and built on the belief that service always came first—began by outfitting the people who kept the city running: service workers, laborers, and naval officers preparing to set sail.
What he offered was more than uniforms—it was confidence, trust, and a sense of belonging for every person who stepped inside. Few knew it then, but Mendel was starting a legacy that would weave itself into Charleston’s story for more than a century.
The War Years & Beyond: Serving Those Who Served
As Charleston’s naval presence expanded, M. Dumas & Sons became the city’s foremost supplier of naval uniforms. Officers knew they could depend on the shop’s impeccable standards and attention to detail, and the store became a familiar touchstone for men whose lives were often spent at sea.
Alongside the crisp dress whites and practical work gear, the store began to reflect the Lowcountry’s love of the outdoors. Hunting apparel and rugged fieldwear filled the racks—garments made for those who found solace in the marsh, the woods, and the water.
Through war, peace, and the ebb and flow of Charleston life, the Dumas name stayed steady.
1960s–1990s: A New Generation, A New Style
With the cultural tide of the 1960s came a shift in what Charleston’s men wanted to wear. M. Dumas & Sons embraced the change, becoming a forerunner in the region’s fashion denim movement. The shop transformed into a place where tradition and modern style lived side by side.
Then, in 1993, a pivotal decision shaped the next chapter. Spotting potential where others saw uncertainty, M. Dumas & Sons introduced a little-known brand called Tommy Bahama to its shelves. This marked the store’s full transition into a premier men’s apparel destination—one known for adventurous curation, deep product knowledge, and a willingness to champion brands long before they hit the mainstream.
A Modern Era, Rooted in Heritage
By the early 2000s, M. Dumas & Sons had grown into one of the country’s most respected men’s specialty retailers. Customers traveled from across the Southeast for its unique blend of Southern hospitality, relaxed sophistication, and remarkable depth of selection.
In 2015, the store underwent a transformative $2 million renovation. The goal was simple: preserve the soul of the historic building while elevating it for the next hundred years. The result was a beautifully restored King Street landmark—open, inviting, and distinctly Lowcountry, with every detail reflecting a century of service and style.
